About KiwiRail

KiwiRail owns and operates New Zealand's national rail network — roughly 4,000 km of track plus signalling, traction power (overhead lines on the North Island Main Trunk between Te Rapa and Palmerston North, and on the Auckland and Wellington commuter networks) and fibre-optic cables running alongside the corridor. Excavation within or adjacent to the rail corridor needs a Track Access Permit before any work starts.

Their assets sit underground across their service area, alongside other utility networks.

KiwiRail runs nationwide infrastructure, which means their cables can be present anywhere in the country. Before excavating anywhere in NZ, request a locate from KiwiRail alongside the local lines company, the council water network, and any other regional operators in your area.
