About Environment Southland
Environment Southland is a regional council: it owns land-drainage, river and catchment scheme assets (community drains, floodgates, pump stations, stopbanks) plus monitoring bores. It does NOT own three-waters reticulation, which the Southland district and city councils run.
As a council operator, Environment Southland is responsible for stormwater across its district. Anyone planning excavation work - building, fencing, landscaping or trenching - must identify and protect their underground pipes before breaking ground.
